Homework Schedule and Tips
I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for enriching the classroom experience. In order to help students get their homework assignments done, they will have the same schedule each week. They will know what should be done and what is expected of them. The homework folder includes their Reading Log which must be signed each evening.
Weekly schedule: (Students can receive 2 DOJO points each night by completing homework.)
Monday:
Read 15 minutes
Reading worksheet
Tuesday:
Read 15 minutes
Math worksheet
Wednesday:
Read 15 minutes
Spelling pretest at home, rewrite missed words
Thursday:
Read 15 minutes
Math worksheet
Friday: No homework! Earn extra DOJO points by reading over the weekend.
My top 5 tips for completing homework:
1. PLACE: Have an agreed upon quiet place for homework to be done and turn the television off. Set a specific time for homework to start and set a timer for each increment. Students will learn that if they get to work, time will fly by!
2. JOB: Make homework an important task. “Homework” is a life skill. Encourage your child to think of homework as their job.
3. REWARD: Refrain from rewarding your child for doing homework as it is an expected activity. If it is turning into a battlefield, let me know at once. Homework issues should not ruin evenings!
4. ATTITUDE: Don’t complain about homework in front of your child. If you have a question or problem about homework, email or phone as soon as possible. Remember, a team effort is important!
5. THINK LONG TERM: Homework in the lower grades is designed to develop the habit of working, organizing, and practicing skills and content in an independent manner. They are learning skills they will use their entire life.
